Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about planning your East African adventure

Planning a safari adventure can raise many questions. We've compiled answers to the most common questions about our tours, bookings, destinations, and travel requirements. If you don't find what you're looking for, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Booking & Payment

How far in advance should I book my safari?

We recommend booking at least 2-3 months in advance, especially for gorilla trekking permits which are limited and sell out quickly. For peak season (June-September, December-January), we suggest booking 4-6 months ahead. However, we can accommodate last-minute bookings subject to availability.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept bank transfers, credit cards (Visa, Mastercard), and mobile money payments. Payment terms typically include a deposit (usually 30-50%) to secure your booking, with the balance due 30 days before travel. Specific payment methods and terms will be discussed during booking.

Do you offer group discounts?

Yes! We offer special rates for groups of 4 or more travelers. Group discounts vary depending on group size and package selected. Contact us with your group size, preferred dates, and destinations for a customized quote with group pricing.

What is your cancellation policy?

Our cancellation policy varies by package and timing. Generally, cancellations made 60+ days before departure receive a full refund minus processing fees. Cancellations 30-60 days before receive 50% refund. Cancellations within 30 days are non-refundable, though we'll work with you to reschedule when possible. Gorilla permit fees are non-refundable once issued.

Can I customize an existing package?

Absolutely! All our packages can be customized to match your interests, budget, and schedule. Whether you want to add extra days, change accommodations, include specific activities, or combine multiple destinations, we'll create a personalized itinerary just for you.

Destinations

What's the best time to visit Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya?

Each country has two dry seasons which are ideal for safaris: June-September and December-February. These periods offer the best wildlife viewing, clearer skies, and easier road conditions. However, each season has unique advantages - the wet seasons (March-May, October-November) bring lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and lower prices. Gorilla trekking is possible year-round, though dry seasons are more comfortable.

Can I visit all three countries in one trip?

Yes! We offer multi-country itineraries that combine Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya. These typically range from 10-21 days depending on your interests. Border crossings are straightforward with proper documentation. We handle all visa arrangements and border formalities to ensure smooth transitions between countries.

Do I need visas for Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya?

Most nationalities require visas for these countries. However, there's an East African Tourist Visa ($100) that allows travel between Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya for 90 days. We can assist with visa applications and provide all necessary documentation. Some nationalities can obtain visas on arrival, while others need to apply in advance.

What's the difference between gorilla trekking in Uganda vs Rwanda?

Both offer incredible gorilla experiences. Uganda (Bwindi) has more gorilla families and generally easier terrain, with permits costing $700. Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park) offers shorter trekking distances, stunning volcanic scenery, and permits cost $1,500. Both guarantee seeing gorillas, and the experience is equally magical. We can help you choose based on your preferences and budget.

Travel & Logistics

What's included in your tour packages?

Our packages typically include: accommodation, meals (as specified), transportation in 4WD vehicles, professional guide, park entry fees, gorilla/chimp permits (where applicable), and airport transfers. International flights, visas, travel insurance, tips, and personal expenses are usually excluded. Each package details what's included - we're transparent about all costs.

What type of vehicles do you use?

We use well-maintained 4WD safari vehicles (Land Cruisers, Land Rovers) with pop-up roofs for optimal game viewing. All vehicles are regularly serviced, insured, and driven by experienced drivers. For larger groups, we use minibuses or coaches. All vehicles have air conditioning and are equipped for long-distance travel.

What standard of accommodation do you use?

We offer a range from budget-friendly lodges to luxury tented camps and 5-star lodges. Accommodation standards vary by package and budget. We work with trusted partners offering clean, safe, and comfortable options. Upgrades are always available - just let us know your preferences and we'll tailor accordingly.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes, comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for all our tours. It should cover medical emergencies, evacuation, trip cancellation, and loss of belongings. We can help arrange travel insurance or provide recommendations. Make sure your policy covers adventure activities like gorilla trekking and safaris.

What should I pack for my safari?

Essential items include: neutral-colored clothing (khaki, beige, green), long-sleeved shirts and pants, warm layers for early mornings, waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, camera, and any personal medications. We provide a detailed packing list upon booking confirmation.

Safety & Health

Are the safaris safe?

Yes, safaris are very safe when conducted with experienced guides and reputable operators. Our guides are trained in wildlife behavior and safety protocols. We follow all park regulations, maintain safe distances from animals, and use certified vehicles. Your safety is our top priority, and we've maintained an excellent safety record.

What vaccinations do I need?

Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for entry into these countries. We also recommend: hepatitis A & B, typhoid, tetanus, and routine vaccinations. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended. Consult your doctor or travel clinic 4-6 weeks before travel for personalized advice based on your health and itinerary.

Is gorilla trekking physically demanding?

Gorilla trekking can be physically challenging, involving hiking through dense forest and hilly terrain for 1-8 hours. However, treks are tailored to group fitness levels, and porters are available to assist. You don't need to be an athlete, but reasonable fitness helps. We can arrange easier treks for those with mobility concerns.

What about COVID-19 and health protocols?

We follow all local health guidelines and maintain high hygiene standards. Vehicles are sanitized regularly, and we work with accommodations that prioritize guest safety. Requirements may change, so we'll keep you informed of any health protocols before your trip. Most restrictions have been lifted, but we remain vigilant.

Packages & Tours

What's the difference between a package and a custom tour?

Packages are pre-designed itineraries with fixed dates, activities, and pricing - perfect for those who want convenience. Custom tours are tailored to your specific interests, dates, and budget. Both offer excellent value - packages are often more cost-effective, while custom tours offer maximum flexibility and personalization.

Can solo travelers join group tours?

Yes! Solo travelers are welcome on our group tours. Single supplements apply for private rooms, but we can often match solo travelers to share rooms if preferred. Many of our travelers come alone and leave with new friends. We also offer private tours for those who prefer solo experiences.

What age restrictions apply to your tours?

Most tours welcome all ages. However, gorilla trekking has a minimum age of 15 years. Children under 12 often receive discounts. Family-friendly packages are available with activities suitable for all ages. We can create itineraries specifically designed for families with children.

Do you offer photography-focused tours?

Yes! We offer specialized photography tours with extended game viewing times, optimal lighting conditions, and guides knowledgeable about wildlife photography. These tours accommodate photographers' needs with early starts, longer stays at prime locations, and vehicles equipped for camera equipment.

What makes your tours different from others?

Our local expertise, personalized service, and commitment to responsible tourism set us apart. We're not just tour operators - we're passionate locals who know hidden gems, work directly with communities, and ensure authentic experiences. Our small group sizes, expert guides, and attention to detail create unforgettable journeys.
